Is aspartame (E951) safe?

What is aspartame?
- An artificial sweetener roughly 200 times sweeter than sugar, so tiny amounts replace a lot of sugar
- In the body it breaks down into aspartic acid, phenylalanine and a small amount of methanol — regulators judge these amounts too small to harm most people at permitted intakes
- The phenylalanine matters for one group: people with phenylketonuria (PKU), who cannot metabolise it — hence the mandatory warning on labels
- Label names: aspartame, E951, INS 951 — plus the warning "contains a source of phenylalanine"
Which foods contain it?
- Diet and "zero sugar" soft drinks — the biggest source by far
- Sugar-free chewing gum and mints
- "No added sugar" yoghurts, desserts and jellies
- Tabletop sweetener sachets and drops
- Some sugar-free squashes, flavoured waters and protein products
- In India: look for INS 951 on diet colas, sugar-free mouth fresheners, chyawanprash-style "sugar free" products and tabletop sweeteners — with the phenylalanine declaration FSSAI requires

Why do the WHO's own agencies disagree?
- They answer different questions. IARC asks "could this cause cancer at all?" (hazard); JECFA asks "is it risky at the amounts people actually eat?" (risk)
- IARC's evidence: three observational studies linking sweetened-drink intake to liver cancer — suggestive, but unable to rule out other explanations
- JECFA's read: the same studies aren't consistent or strong enough to change the intake limit set in 1981
- Scale matters: a can of diet cola has roughly 200 mg of aspartame; a 70 kg adult would need around 9–14 cans a day, every day, to reach the WHO limit
- One more WHO wrinkle: a separate 2023 WHO guideline advises against using any non-sugar sweetener for weight control — a nutrition recommendation, not a safety ruling

Does aspartame cause cancer?
Not proven. IARC's 2023 "possibly carcinogenic" classification reflects limited evidence for liver cancer — the weakest of its positive categories. JECFA, the FDA and EFSA reviewed the evidence and kept aspartame approved within existing intake limits.
How many cans of diet cola would reach the WHO limit?
Roughly 9–14 cans a day for a 70 kg adult, depending on the brand's dose (a can is typically about 200 mg against a 2,800 mg daily limit). Habitual moderate intake sits well inside the ADI — the flag is about the unresolved cancer question, not about one can.
Is aspartame banned anywhere?
No major regulator has banned it. The EU, US, UK, India, Canada and Australia all permit it within limits. The IARC classification is a hazard label, not a ban.
Why do labels say "contains a source of phenylalanine"?
Aspartame releases phenylalanine when digested. People with phenylketonuria (PKU) — a rare inherited condition — cannot metabolise it safely, so the warning is mandatory in most markets, including India under FSSAI rules.
