Why "safe" doesn't mean "good for you"
- The regulators agree — that's the unusual part. No major body restricts maltodextrin. So the flag isn't about legality; it's about what it does to your blood sugar
- It behaves like fast sugar. Its glycaemic index is reported around 85–136, versus roughly 65 for table sugar and 100 for pure glucose — so it can raise blood glucose quickly despite barely tasting sweet

Regulators consider it safe as an ingredient. The catch is glycaemic: it raises blood sugar faster than table sugar. In small amounts it's unremarkable, but it adds up in heavily processed diets, and it matters more if you're managing blood sugar. Early animal research on the gut lining is a watch-point, not a confirmed human risk.
Does maltodextrin spike blood sugar?
Yes. It's a rapidly digested starch with a very high glycaemic index — higher than table sugar — so it can raise blood glucose quickly even though it's only mildly sweet.
Is maltodextrin banned anywhere?
