What is sucralose?
- A no-calorie artificial sweetener, roughly 600 times sweeter than sugar
- Made from sugar, with three chlorine atoms swapped in — the body doesn't break most of it down for energy
- Prized because it stays sweet under heat, unlike many other sweeteners
- Label names: sucralose, E955, INS 955
Which foods contain it?
- Diet, "zero" and no-added-sugar soft drinks
- Sugar-free chewing gum, mints and boiled sweets
- Protein powders, protein bars and meal-replacement shakes
- "No added sugar" yoghurts, ice creams and desserts
- Tabletop sweetener sachets and "diabetic-friendly" products
- In India: common in sugar-free beverages, protein supplements and "sugar-free" sweets — look for INS 955 and a "Contains added sweetener" declaration

Why do the messages seem to disagree?
- Two different questions. Food-safety regulators ask "is it toxic at normal intake?" — the answer is no. The WHO asks "does it help you lose weight or stay healthier?" — the answer is: no clear benefit
- The heat question is live. Sucralose is sold as heat-stable, yet EFSA's own 2026 opinion declined a high-temperature bakery use over chlorinated-compound uncertainty above 120°C — a genuine open question, not a settled one
- Emerging research on the gut. Some peer-reviewed studies report effects on gut bacteria and glucose response; regulators judge the current evidence insufficient to change the ADI, but it is why sucralose stays under scrutiny

Is sucralose banned anywhere?
No. It is permitted as a sweetener by the FDA, EFSA and FSSAI within set limits. EFSA reaffirmed it as safe at current uses in February 2026, while declining a new high-temperature bakery use.
Why does the WHO warn about it if regulators say it's safe?
They answer different questions. Safety regulators judge it non-toxic at normal intake. The WHO's 2023 guideline is about weight control, and found non-sugar sweeteners give no long-term benefit and may carry undesirable effects with long-term use. "Safe to eat" is not "good for you".
What's the daily limit?
EFSA and JECFA set an Acceptable Daily Intake of 15 mg per kg of body weight per day. EFSA's 2026 review found typical exposure stays below it.
Can I bake with it?
It is heat-stable in normal use, which is why it's in baked goods. But EFSA declined a new high-temperature bakery use in 2026 over uncertainty about chlorinated compounds forming above 120°C. Research is ongoing.
